Staff Attorney

Department: Legal & Government Affairs
Reports to: General Counsel & Director of Government Affairs 

The Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® is a professional trade association for licensed real estate practitioners. Membership in the organization is voluntary and consists of both residential and commercial agents and brokers as well as industry affiliates. MAR’s membership currently consists of approximately 24,000 real estate licensees, and only association members are authorized to use the trademark term, REALTOR®.
The staff attorney assists the General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs with researching and analyzing the association’s compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  Provides basic legal support and assistance to Association members and committees.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Reviews and analyzes proposed legislation, regulations and appellate court decisions that may affect Association and members.
  • Responds to incoming member questions through Legal Hotline; researches and provides advice and counsel to members regarding legal matters.
  • Provides substantive analysis of legislation and regulations that impact property rights and/or the practice of real estate brokerage in MA. 
  • Prepare materials for distribution to the Legislature and various boards and commissions.
  • Serves as staff liaison to various association committees; follows up on action items, communicates with volunteer members.
  • Performs any other function or responsibility as assigned.
  • Travels to other locations to perform job functions as needed. 
Education and Experience:
  • J.D. Degree and member of the Massachusetts Bar Association in good standing.
  • 0-2 years of related experience.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately identify, read, and analyze legislation and regulations important to Realtors and homeowners.
  • Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, presentation, communication and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of specific Massachusetts statues, regulations, case law, and Massachusetts legislative process.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Ability to summarize and communicate in English complex legal information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
